3 Suited Hands
These hands are relatively rare. About 2% in fact! However they are relatively hard to handle.
BETA has few specific provisions for them.
If opening the bidding in any position:
If 4-4 in the majors Open 1H with 10+
If holding a 5 card
diamond suit (case of a 5440 distribution) open the 5 card Diamond suit
UNLESS 4-4 in majors and rebid your better 4 card suit
If 5-4-4-0 with a 5 card major and a 4-5LTC open 2Ma and over partners
2NT response show your stronger 2nd suit. Otherwise open 1Ma in your 5
card Major and rebid in your 2nd suit.
For all other 4441 hands open 1C and follow normal bidding:
If opponents open 1C Double with both majors or transfer for your Major.
If opponents open the bidding in your shortage:
With 11-15................... bid : Double. This is unfortuntely not guaranteeing 3 -suits as the lowest ranking suit is not necessarily a 4 card suit
With
16+...................... overcall 1N and rebid 2N over the 2C response
- this shows your 3-suited hand - partner chooses....give fit.
Not perfect - but opponents may have more difficulty!
